To be or not to be - Home of Hamlet

So where does Hamlet fit into the picture?

In1601 Shakespeare published his version of the drama Hamlet; a story about Danish prince Hamlet. William elaborated upon the dramatic story of family and blood revenge and transformed into a modern renaissance story in Denmark’s famous Kronborg Castle. The Castle has since become known throughout the world as “Hamlets Castle in Elsinore”. Few places in the world are as richly surrounded by as much drama and history as Kronborg in Elsinore. It’s where the deadly cannon clad fortress meets the lavish Renaissance castle and where Hamlet’s spirit haunts the hallway.

The Shakespeare Festival every year

Shakespeare festival at Hamlet's castle is a Danish event which in 1816 established the Shakespeare tradition at Kronborg Castle. The spectacular and amazing world-class interpretations of Shakespeare are produced by some of the most prestigious theatre companies. The performance takes place in the open air in the courtyard of the castle every year in August.

An all-day experience

You can probably see most of Kronborg in less than an hour or two. But there is enough to keep you busy for a half day; Visit the new M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark, designed by the world-famous architects Bjarke Ingels Group and recommended by N.Y. Times as must sees in 2014. Just follow the ramp down to the old dry dock, that is located outside the entrance to the Castle. Also, visit the Culture Yard and the monument HAN – all within walking distance from the cruise quay.

Port of Elsinore

Ships dock right at Elsinore town centre, and close to Kronborg Castle: Home of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and host of the Shakespeare Festival every summer. Elsinore is a key point to neighbouring attractions: Renaissance castle Frederiksborg, the Baroque Garden, Fredensborg Castle, the summer residence of the Queen of Denmark and the royal family.

Kronborg Castle was built in the early 1400’s, to collect dues of ships. The old town centre with ancient cobbled streets and bourgeois houses can be perused on a cosy, guided tour.

At the waterfront, you find HAN, a new sculptural tribute to the classic Little Mermaid. Nearby, the new Maritime Museum offers a visionary presentation of Denmark’s maritime heritage.

A short train ride (departs every 20 minutes) takes you to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (works by Picasso, Warhol) and to Rungstedlund, home of Karen Blixen (a.k.a. Isak Dinesen). Elsinore is just 45 km from Copenhagen.
