Experience the Gunpowder Works Area: The Entire History of the Area

The Gunpowder Works Area is characterized by both its unique structure and the many well-preserved historical buildings, where cultural, artistic, and community life thrive alongside various businesses.

This walk begins with a visit to the old Charcoal Burner's Plant, built by J.F. Classen in the 1760s. It lasts longer than the museum's other Tuesday city walks, although the route is shorter. The tour is concentrated on the unique, well-preserved gunpowder works area, close to the centre of Frederiksværk, and includes an atmospheric evening visit to the gunpowder works museum and a small refreshment.

Today, the area constitutes a recreational and diverse cultural environment with a museum, art gallery, associations, and small businesses. In recent years, it has undergone a careful upgrade as part of the "Steel City" project – most recently in the form of a restoration of the canal itself and the creation of a new, safe passage between Nordtorvet and the Gunpowder Works Area.

During the walk, you get a glimpse into the past – back when the powder master could simply listen to the small bells of the mills to hear if the production was running smoothly. We take a closer look at the individual houses and present the fascinating development within gunpowder production over 200 years.
