Summer for children at Frederiksborg Castle
On the trail of princes and princesses - activities for children every day during the school summer holidays at Frederiksborg Castle.
Take a walk through Denmark's history at the largest Renaissance castle in the Nordic countries. Experience the museum and the current special exhibitions on your own or take part in guided tours of the castle's and museum's history. In the family tour "On the trail of princes and princesses", visitors take children around Frederiksborg every day during the school's summer holidays.
The buzz of history blows from all directions at Christian IV's impressive Renaissance castle, Frederiksborg, which, surrounded by the equally remarkable Baroque Garden, is idyllically located on three islands in Slotssøen in Hillerød. Inside the magnificent splendour rooms and sumptuous living rooms and tower rooms, the portraits in the national portrait gallery put faces on people who have shaped the history of Denmark.
Monumental paintings testify to historical events, and special exhibitions tell of H.K.H. Crown Princess Mary and the role of Crown Princess, the Order of the Dannebrog and one of the most prominent female figures in Danish history, Leonora Christina.
On the trail of princes and princesses, costume testing and track games for children.
Every day from Saturday 25 June to Sunday 7 August 2022, the museum offers guided tours of Frederiksborg Castle's history - from the time as a royal residence and the time the coronation ceremonies of the autocratic kings in the Castle Church - to the night when a catastrophic fire destroyed the castle, who subsequently, especially on the initiative of Carlsberg's founder, brews J.C. Jacobsen, was rebuilt and opened as a national history museum.
This summer's family tours take the museum's youngest guests around Frederiksborg Castle. On the trail of princes and princesses, children and their families must help find portraits of kings' sons and daughters through time. Along the way, the magnificent halls are seen, and stories are told about the royal children's lives and upbringing through time.
The castle's old wine cellar has a family tour every day in the children's exhibition Christian IV - Child and King. Children can try the museum's recreated historical costumes and write with ink and a quill in the cosy surroundings under Frederiksborg.
Several track games provide ample opportunity to explore the museum and the extraordinary exhibitions on your own with children. The audio guide Frederiksborg for children tells the story of the castle at child height.
The story of Frederiksborg can also be heard as an audio guide through the museum app Smartify. The National History Museum is chronologically structured as a walk through Denmark's history. The app contains a guide to all the museum's living rooms and the special exhibition H.K.H. Crown Princess Mary 1972 - 2022 in the Knights Hall. Through the app, it is possible to scan most of the museum's works for in-depth information.
