Outdoor Experiences

Experience the North Zealand coast through the locals. Throw in the blue wave and notice the rush and excitement of whizzing over the water. Experience the North Coast and the beautiful scenery from the waterside. Here are great opportunities for a lovely day by the sea.

North Zealand offers lovely experiences all year round. On the long stretch of the coast, there are wide, white, sandy beaches with excellent swimming opportunities; you will find them at Dronningmølle, Tisvildeleje, Lisleje and Hundested. Elsewhere, you can enjoy the breathtaking view over Kattegat from the high cliffs at Gilbjerghoved, for instance, Heatherhill, the heathered hills. By Hundested, the sometimes rough Kattegat joins the gentler Isefjord and Roskilde Fjord. Bicycle Route 47 follows the whole north coast.

The two largest lakes in Denmark, Arresø and Esrum Sø, are in North Zealand. Here, you can go canoeing or paddle a kayak, fishing, and enjoy the abundant birdlife. Go for an hour’s sailing trip on the charming ferry M/S Frederikke on Arresø, a lovely nature experience for the whole family.

Gribskov is Denmark’s second-largest forest, with outstanding scenery with lakes, bogs, meadows, and hilly grazing land.

On Melby Overdrev, between Liseleje Plantation and Asserbo Plantation, Heather extends to the dunes. The many flowers in the open areas attract beautiful butterflies and other rare insects. Grasshoppers play music while bumblebees buzz heavily from flower to flower. This can also be experienced at Gilbjerg Hoved and Rusland near Rudolph Tegner's Museum.

Tisvilde Hegn has a unique story, as the forest was planted on sand. Lots of sand. Sand that had blown in from the beach for centuries covered several villages. Not all trees thrive on the sand. The Scots pine can handle it. But the wind from the sea and the larvae of the pine moth have transformed parts of the forest into a magical troll place with twisted trunks in many forms. Some believe the Sea Bull stirred up the sand many years ago. Now, it has reappeared on a sea-inspired forest playground at Liseleje Beach.

At Hundested, the harsh Kattegat meets the gentler Isefjord and Roskilde Fjord. Experience it all from the bike saddle along the North Coast Trail, route 47. Denmark's two largest lakes, Arresø and Esrum Lake, are in North Zealand. You can go canoeing or kayaking, fishing and enjoy the rich birdlife here. Take advantage of the excellent barbecue places along Esrum Lake, and head out with the charming boat cruise M / S Frederikke on Arresø.

Gribskov is Denmark's second-largest forest and a unique natural area with forest lakes, bogs, meadows and hilly overgrazing and now part of the National Park of North Zealand. The forest is a gold mine of nature experiences. How about an overnight stay outdoors, in a shelter or a tent site? Get plenty of inspiration for nature experiences here on this site.
